Press release : Thousands of smokers prepare to quit on No Smoking Day

Surveys show that over two million smokers are ready to stub it out for good on No Smoking Day, Wednesday 10 March 2010.

This year’s campaign theme, Break free, we can help, acknowledges that No Smoking Day is the time for smokers to break free from their smoking habit and escape their chains of addiction. The theme is a message of support and empowerment that has come from smokers’ themselves.

Our message to smokers is why not break free this No Smoking Day? You can break free with the help and support that is available the UK.  Those who do stop smoking on March 10 will gain health and financial benefits in next to no time, including:

Duncan Bannatyne OBE, No Smoking Day President commented, “Quitting smoking isn’t always easy. Most of the nine million UK smokers say they’d like to quit, and many have tried to stop several times over the last year. If you’ve tried and failed a few times, don’t give up hope. You’ll find few ex-smokers that quit the habit on their first attempt.”

Dan Tickle, No Smoking Day Chief Executive said, Research has shown that over two thirds of them would like to stop.  No Smoking Day provides an excellent opportunity for them to do that.  By using the support available on No Smoking Day and throughout the year you can significantly increase your chance of success.”

Dan adds “Good luck to all the smokers who are breaking free on March 10 – remember you’re not alone. Take advantage of the support available; you’ll get friendly and expert advice to help you to stop smoking for good.”

Note to editors

No Smoking Day, organised by a charity of the same name, is run by four full time staff. Based in London, the charity is funded by a coalition of governmental and voluntary sector organisations with an interest in health.

No Smoking Day aims to help people who want to stop smoking by creating a supportive environment for them, and by highlighting the many sources of help available to people who want to quit.

Now in its 27th year it is a firm fixture in the UK calendar because of its popularity amongst smokers and continued success. Three quarters of smokers would like to stop and on No Smoking Day over a million try. Stopping smoking requires much planning, encouragement, support and motivation. Helping others to prepare to quit can be done year round, but the Day provides an excellent focus and motivation for many smokers to stop.
